Cost
Water softener installation cost
The softener is the part of this quote you can price before anyone visits. The rest is plumbing, and what it costs depends on one thing more than any other: whether the house already has a loop and a drain.
We do not publish an installed price, and here is why. A national median for a job this variable would describe almost nobody’s house. Labour on a softener is not covered by any public dataset, so a figure here would have to come from quotes we collected, and we hold no installer quotes. Rather than invent one, this page prices the equipment, explains what moves the rest, and links people who posted what they actually paid.
What the equipment costs
This is the half of the quote you can check before a salesperson arrives, and it is the half most likely to be marked up. Two rows rather than one, because the catalogue says the split matters more than the size does: a softener bundled with carbon, iron or chlorine treatment costs roughly double the bare unit, while the whole capacity range moves the price by less than that.
| Line | Catalogue price | What decides it |
|---|---|---|
| Softener alone | $1,327 | Grain capacity and valve type |
| Bundled with filtration | $2,527 | What else is treated: carbon, iron, chlorine, sediment |
Catalogue feeds, 45 listings across 6 brands that publish a product feed · retrieved 2026-09-01 · Catalogue price for the softener alone, not an installed price. Spans 25,000–80,000 grains, so it is what a residential softener costs and not what one costs at a stated size.

What decides the rest of the quote
Quotes arrive as one number, and the number moves with the job rather than the appliance. These four situations are most of the spread. Find yours before you compare bids, because two quotes for different situations are not comparable at all.
| Situation | What the plumber is actually doing |
|---|---|
| Existing loop, swap | An old softener is already plumbed in. Drain, loop and bypass all exist, so this is a disconnect and reconnect. The cheapest version of this job. |
| Unfinished basement, new fit | Accessible main and a drain within reach. Cutting into the main and running a short drain line, with room to work. |
| Garage or slab, new fit | A drain has to be run, and in cold climates freeze protection as well. The same appliance, a materially larger job. |
| Well water with iron | An iron filter goes in ahead of the softener, because iron fouls resin. Two appliances, not one, and it is why well quotes look high beside city ones. |
Quotes we would turn down
Three shapes of quote worth refusing, whatever the number attached to them.
- An in-home sales quote for equipment that retails for a fraction of it. Compare any quoted system against the catalogue prices above before signing anything in your own kitchen.
- A softener sold to remove contaminants. Softeners exchange calcium and magnesium for sodium. That is the entire mechanism. They are not the technology for PFAS, lead or disinfection by-products, and a system sold as doing both is two products in one cabinet at best. See what is actually certified for PFAS.
- Rental, without the break-even worked out. Ask what the same unit costs outright, and how long you plan to stay in the house. Rentals are rarely refused on price; they are refused on arithmetic.
Running cost, which nobody quotes
A softener regenerates on a schedule and sends 33–162 gallons down the drain each time it does. Salt is the other running cost, and it depends on your hardness and household size, which is why we will not put one number on it.
Culligan HE Water Softener Owner's Guide, doc 01021076 Rev H (11/19) · retrieved 2026-09-01 · Per regeneration, across four tank sizes and three regeneration methods in one manufacturer's range. Upflow uses roughly a third of downflow at the same tank size. One manufacturer, so this is the shape of the spread rather than an industry figure.
Before pricing anything, size it. A quote for the wrong capacity is not a cheap quote or an expensive one. It is the wrong appliance. Work out what size you need.
What people are actually reporting
We do not average these and we do not publish a figure from them. Every one is a link to somebody else’s account of their own job, with the date they posted it, so you can read the context that makes the number mean something. We earn nothing from any link in this list.

SERP Weakness Index 7 for water softener installation cost, the highest the instrument measured in this category.
