Which water filters are certified to reduce PFAS
6 companies hold NSF certification for Total PFAS Reduction. 10 hold it for PFOA and PFOS individually. Across all three claims, 169 certified models list a product form and not one of them is a whole-house system.

PFAS is not one certification. It is three separate claims under NSF/ANSI Standard 53, and a product certified for one is not certified for the others. Certification is granted per model, not per brand.

Every certified model is a point-of-use product
NSF records a product form against each listing. Counting them across all three PFAS claims gives an answer with no hedging in it: of the 169 certified models that list a form, the whole-house count is 0.

Product forms are NSF’s own labels, counted from the same claim queries linked above. Replacement elements are counted with the product they belong to.
We also checked all 16 of the water treatment brands covered on this site against the register, from both directions: brand by brand, and by asking NSF who holds each PFAS claim. None of them appears on any of the three lists.
That is not a gap in their engineering, and it is not evidence that anyone has overstated anything. PFAS reduction is certified on point-of-use products because contact time and media are different: water moving through a whole-house filter at full household flow spends a fraction of the time against the media that it does in a counter-top or under-sink cartridge, which is where almost every certified model above sits. The certifications follow the physics.
What this does not say. No category brand holds an NSF PFAS claim, corroborated from both query directions. This is an absence from the NSF register ONLY — WQA and IAPMO were not queried and cannot be, so this may not be stated as "no certified PFAS reduction".
What is actually in the water
Between 2023 and 2025, EPA required every water system serving more than 3,300 people (and a national sample of smaller ones) to test for 30 contaminants. That produced 1,992,002 results from 10,313 systems. EPA finalised the dataset in July 2026 and has said it will not be updated again.
97.1% of those results are non-detects, below the lowest concentration the laboratories are able to report. That is not the same as zero, and EPA is explicit that a reporting limit carries no health meaning: it describes what a lab can measure, not what is safe to drink.

The compounds most often found are the ones nobody certifies for
PFOA and PFOS are the two PFAS with enforceable federal limits, and they are the two the certification system is built around. Both were detected less often than 4 other PFAS. Of the four found most often, 3 have no federal limit at all, and not one has an NSF reduction claim of its own. The three claims that exist cover PFOA, PFOS, and Total PFAS.
This is the gap. Certification is granted per compound. Regulation is written per compound. The compounds actually turning up in American drinking water are largely outside both.
And they rarely arrive alone
Of the 6,499 sampling locations where any PFAS was detected, 4,286 had more than one, about 66 in every hundred. At one location, 13 different PFAS were found together.
A filter certified for PFOA reduction has been tested against PFOA. It has not been tested against the other 28 compounds EPA monitored, and in two thirds of affected locations more than one of them is present. That is the argument for reading the specific claim on a specific model rather than the word “PFAS” on a box.
Where utilities think it comes from
Each system was asked whether it knew of a potential PFAS source near its water. The answers are self-reported, and they track detections closely.

This is an association, not a cause. A utility that suspects a nearby source may also sit in an industrial area, and may test more carefully. EPA drew no conclusion from these answers.
What these numbers are not. UCMR 5 does not show whether any water system complies with a federal standard. EPA determines that separately, from a running annual average of compliance monitoring. Nothing here says a named utility has breached anything.
For PFOA and PFOS the reporting limit and the federal limit are the same number, so a non-detect does not mean the water is below a safe level. It means the laboratory could not measure lower. And a system with no result is not a clean system: most US water systems were never required to test.
“NSF certified” often does not mean what it looks like
A product page saying “NSF certified” may be describing a component listing, a housing certified for material and structural integrity, confirming it will not leach and will hold pressure. That is a real and useful certification. It says nothing about removing anything from your water.

If you see NSF P473 on a box
P473 was the protocol written for PFOA and PFOS. It has been retired and folded into Standards 53 and 58. Packaging and marketing copy still cite it. A current certification lives under 53 or 58, so P473 on a label is a sign the copy is old, not that the product is uncertified.
