Cost
Whole-house water filtration system cost
The sticker price is the smaller half of this question. What the system costs to own is decided by media replacement, and that is the number nobody puts in the quote.
We do not publish a price for this, and the reason is specific. We hold catalogue prices for whole-house filters, but they pool replacement cartridges with complete tank systems in one band, and a median across those two describes neither. A number we cannot separate is a number we will not print. Below is what actually moves the cost, and what people report paying.
What you pay once
Two lines, and only one of them is the appliance. The split matters because installers quote them together and the equipment is the part you can shop.
| Line | What decides it |
|---|---|
| Tank and media | Tank size and media type. Catalytic carbon costs more than standard carbon and lasts differently; a sediment stage ahead of it is a separate purchase. |
| Labour at the point of entry | Access to where the main enters the house. A basement with clearance is a different job from a crawl space or a slab, before anybody touches a pipe. |
What you pay every year
This is the section manufacturers leave out, and it is the reason two systems with the same sticker price are not the same purchase. Ask any installer for these three before comparing bids.
| Ask for | Why it decides the ten-year cost |
|---|---|
| Media replacement cost and interval | The single largest running cost, and the one most often quoted as “low maintenance” without a figure. Get both numbers, not one. |
| Sediment pre-filter cost and change interval | Cartridges are cheap individually and are changed several times a year. Ask what the manufacturer states, not what the installer estimates. |
| Service life of the tank and the media, stated separately | They differ, and a warranty on the tank is routinely presented as a warranty on the system. |
Filtration and softening are different jobs. If hardness is your problem, a carbon system will not fix it; if contaminants are, a softener will not, and no amount of salt changes that. Find out which one you actually have.
What people are actually reporting
We do not average these and we do not publish a figure from them. Every one is a link to somebody else’s account of their own job, with the date they posted it, so you can read the context that makes the number mean something. We earn nothing from any link in this list.
